Mirandés

Mirandés refers to a variety of the Mirandese language, which is a minority Romance language spoken primarily in the northeastern region of Portugal, particularly in the municipality of Miranda do Douro. Mirandese is recognized as a co-official language in this area alongside Portuguese. The language has its roots in the Asturleonese linguistic group and exhibits similarities to both Spanish and Portuguese, though it has distinct phonetic, grammatical, and lexical features. Mirandese is an integral part of the cultural identity of the local community and is used in various aspects of daily life, including education and literature. Its preservation is important for maintaining the region’s heritage and cultural diversity.
