Hamas

Hamas is a Palestinian Islamic organization that has a military and political wing. Founded in 1987 during the First Intifada (uprising) against Israeli occupation, it emerged as an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. The organization’s primary goals include the establishment of an Islamic state in historic Palestine and the resistance against Israeli control. Hamas operates mainly in the Gaza Strip, where it has exercised de facto governance since 2007 after winning legislative elections in 2006.

Hamas is known for its military activities, including armed resistance against Israel, which it views as an occupation. It has been involved in numerous conflicts with Israeli forces, leading to significant violence and casualties on both sides. The organization is also recognized for its social services and welfare programs, which have garnered support among Palestinians.

Internationally, Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by several countries, including the United States and the European Union, due to its attacks on civilians and refusal to recognize Israel’s right to exist. Nevertheless, it remains a significant political force within Palestinian politics and a key player in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
